Course details

Plant Layout Fundamentals – Mining & Metals is an introduction to the business of designing a metal ore processing plant - from ore source to finished products. Specifically, it will provide a general understanding of ore processing circuits, how the major processing equipment is arranged within buildings, and the relative location of these buildings on a site layout of a typical large-scale copper processing plant. The course focuses on conceptually designing the layout of the plant: the arrangement of all the major equipment while considering safety, cost, operation and maintenance requirements and the location of associated buildings and supporting structures on the overall site. The course will also emphasize the importance of the Plant Layout Designer - a key role at any mining and metals engineering consulting company. The course is geared towards individuals who are interested in entering the mining and metals design-engineering industry, as well as experienced professionals who have specialized in other engineering disciplines, such as Process, Mechanical, Structural, Civil and Electrical engineering, who wish to obtain a better understanding of how the entire processing plant works and how the design of it is conceived.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the importance and the sequencing of the processing circuits, and relate them to the various physical process plant areas.
  • Interpret the flow of graphics on a Process Flow Diagram.
  • Differentiate between the scopes of work of all the engineering disciplines.
  • Explain the simplified principle of how ore is processed into metal products.
  • Describe the staging of an engineering project – from executing a study to construction.
  • Interpret the degree of detail required on plant layout general arrangement drawings.
  • Explain the value role of a Plant Layout Designer to a consulting engineering company.
  • List the main construction activities required before a plant goes into production.
  • Describe where and how to begin when conceiving the design of an ore processing plant.
  • Recall many of the basic design factors, and ensure that safety is the highest priority.
  • Recognize and name the various process areas and major equipment used within them.
  • Refer to the course material to help you prepare conceptual plant layout sketches.
  • Apply geometric and volumetric calculations in conceptualizing plant layout.
  • Describe the advantages of utilizing pre-engineered buildings in plant layout design.
  • Explain how to begin the conceptual design of a mineral processing plant.

Effective as of Fall 2014
