Course Overview
Focusing on the partnership relationship between the nurse, the child, the family, and the multidisciplinary team, children with a variety of health challenges arising from serious illness are presented in a case study format in order to examine the principles guiding the management of the child’s care. This course builds on the understanding of nursing practice acquired in NSPE 7100, NSPE 7200 and NSPE 7300, by examining the pediatric nurse's role in the context of the patient's experience of selected serious illnesses. Specifically, learners will explore additional comprehensive assessment strategies, strategies to optimize oxygen supply and demand balance in seriously ill patients. Learners will be challenged to make clinical decisions and plan care for selected seriously ill children including those experiencing respiratory insufficiency, intracranial pressure, postoperative cardiac management, cardiac failure, and hemodynamic instability. The child's and family's experience of serious illness and hospitalisation will be explored in some detail.

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Integrate principles of growth and development, knowledge of anatomy and physiology and familycentered care in the assessment and care of pediatric patients experiencing various serious health challenges.
- Examine pharmacologic agents commonly used to treat various health challenges to inform clinical decision making for serioulsy ill pediatric patients.
- Describe and demonstrate techniques for safe medication administration in pediatric settings for pediatric patients experiencing various health challenges.
- Use knowledge of unique pediatric anatomy and pathophysiology, clinical presentation and comprehensive assessment to critically analyze data, form and prioritize conclusions and plan immediate nursing care to optimize oxygen supply and demand for a pediatric patient.
- Use communication and collaboration skills in order to establish and maintain partnerships with an inter-professional team, families, and pediatric patient with serious illnesses.
- Develop a perspective of the child’s, adolescent’s, and family’s experience with serious illness.
