Course Overview
Building on the concepts presented in Pediatric Nursing Theory 1, students work through advanced, complex chronic and acute pediatric critical care patient presentations, while considering children’s growth and development stages and the unique physiology of the different pediatric age groups. Students will continue to develop a deeper level of understanding of pediatric pathophysiology, assessment, and decision making related to a variety of health challenges experienced by the child experiencing neurological health challenges and those requiring surgical intervention arising from acute or chronic illness. The relationship between the nurse and the child and family, will be the principles guiding the management of these children's care. Children’s experiences of illness, surgery, and hospitalization will be explored in some detail. One of the main focuses of this course is on the physiologic effects of illness and its treatment and the nurse’s role in the promotion of health and healing. Finally students will be challenged to make clinical decisions and plan care for selected critically ill individuals. Family-centred care, relational practice and inter-professional practice, professionalism, communication, collaboration and partnership are core concepts threaded throughout this and all subsequent pediatric critical care courses.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Integrate principles of growth and development, knowledge of anatomy and physiology and familycentered care in the assessment and care of pediatric patients experiencing various surgical and neurological health challenges.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of the surgical event, the influence of pre-existing health conditions and the importance of the meaning of the illness, surgery and hospitalization into the plan for nursing care for children with health conditions requiring surgical intervention.
- Identify the influence of family structure and function and the meaning of the child's illness and hospitalization to family members in the care of children with health conditions requiring surgical intervention.
- Interpret multiple sources of information to inform clinical decision making and comprehensively assess the status of the critically ill pediatric patient experiencing various health challenges.
- Develop communication and collaboration skills in order to establish and maintain partnerships with a multidisciplinary team, families, and pediatric patients with various health challenges.
