Course details
A guided learning course addressing the nursing care of children with complex health problems who are living at home with their families. Using a case-study format, students will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills in order to promote the health of these children and their families. Students will explore nursing practice issues particularly relevant to nursing practice in the home and community settings.

Learning Outcomes
In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Integrate principles of growth and development, knowledge of anatomy and physiology and familycentered care in the assessment and care of pediatric patients with a long-term health condition.
- Explore and identify the influence of the physical, social, political, and economic environments on the health and well-being of infants, children, and young people with special health care needs
- Identify professional challenges the practice of nursing in the home setting.
- Explore the moral influences on clinical reasoning in caring for children in the home and community, describing how these will shape nursing practice.
- Integrate principles of palliative care into the plan for management of the care of a dying child.
