Course Overview
This course builds on the concepts presented in NSPE 7100. Focusing on the partnership relationship between the nurse and the child and family, children with a variety of neurological health challenges are presented in a casestudy format in order to examine the principles guiding the management of these children’s care. Children’s experiences of illness and hospitalization will be explored in some detail.

Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course the learner will be able to:
- Integrate concepts related to the impact of the illness and hospitalization on children, and communication and collaboration with children into the plan for nursing care of children with neurological health conditions.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of family structure and function and the meaning of the child's illness and hospitalization to family members in developing a plan of care for children with neurological health conditions.
- Demonstrate integration of principles of the following foci of concern in the nursing care of children requiring with neurological health conditions:
- Tissue perfusion
- Oxygenation/ventilation
- Acid-base balance
- Intracranial dynamics
- Fluid and electrolyte regulation
- Nutrition
- Thermal regulation
- Host defences
- Skin integrity
- Pain and aversive stimuli.
