As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

• Integrate principles of growth and development, knowledge of normal pathophysiology and family-centered care to plan nursing care for children with congenital and acquired cardiovascular health challenges.
• Apply knowledge of abnormal cardiac physiology and congenital heart defects to plan appropriate nursing care for children with cardiovascular conditions.
• Determine preoperative and postoperative care for a child with a cardiac defect, including implementation of evidence-based nursing interventions and provision of family centered care to support to promote optimal recovery and well-being.
• Use knowledge of pediatric anatomy and pathophysiology and comprehensive assessment to optimize oxygen supply and demand for a pediatric patient with congenital and acquired cardiovascular health challenges using case-based studies.
• Identify the unique considerations required when caring for pediatric cardiac patients with special behavioural, emotional, or mental health needs.
• Demonstrate ability to systematically analyze and interpret basic ECG rhythms common in pediatric patients.
• Demonstrate ability to systematically analyze, interpret and manage basic cardiac dysrhythmias.
• Describe and demonstrate techniques for safe administration of medication commonly used to treat pediatric patients with cardiovascular health challenges.
• Apply principles of pediatric pain assessment and management to develop and implement evidence-based, developmentally appropriate interventions that address pain in children with cardiovascular health challenges.
