Course Overview
NURS 1186 is a patient care lab course for sonographers. The goal of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to provide patient care in diagnostic ultrasound departments in hospitals and healthcare clinics. The course introduces the student to the hospital environment and basic safety concepts of providing patient care. Professionalism and professional communication skills will also be explored. Classwork includes a mixture of face-to-face and online lectures, online assignments, lab activities, demonstrations of theoretical concepts and written online examinations. The course includes topics such as occupational health and safety, moving and transferring patients, medical and surgical asepsis, patient assessments and medical emergencies.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Assess, monitor, and respond to the patient's physical and mental status before and during the procedure, and assess their ability to tolerate the examination. (3.1b,e)
- In simulation settings, demonstrate measures that maintain patient information privacy and confidentiality.
- Explain the required interventions to prevent workplace violence, and explain when additional personnel is required to assist in the examination. (3.1g)
- Describe the principles of venipuncture and practice simulated intravenous starts. (3.3k)
- Describe the contribution of Sonographers to the interprofessional health care team, and promote a professional, collaborative workplace environment.
- Employ proper body mechanics by applying principles of musculoskeletal injury prevention (MSIP). (3.1a)
- Identify strategies for effective communication with patients, and communicate significant data to other health care personnel.
- Recognize and respond to emergency situations. (3.1j)
- Recognize physical and fire hazards in hospitals.
- In a simulated environment, describe and demonstrate care measures for unconscious patients, and patients in pain and/or experiencing abnormal sensations.
- In a simulated environment, describe and demonstrate care measures for patients with commonly encountered physical and cognitive disabilities.
- Describe the measures required to perform their duties in the critical care environment.
- Ensure safe and comfortable patient transporting, transferring, and/or positioning while maintaining awareness of the patient's accessory equipment. (3.1a,i)
- Define and with supervision employ universal precautions and sterile technique for infection control. (3.1c,d)
- List situations in which extra precautions are employed and properly don and doff personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Describe the concepts of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Waste Management protocols.
- Measure blood pressure, perform palpation of pulses and palpate areas of interest for examination. (3.3a,b,c)
