Course Overview
Introduces parks and outdoor recreation management and covers many topics, including: management of protected areas with all types of governance; overview of outdoor recreation; park development, planning and design; practical exercises in site analysis; park and natural history interpretation; ecological integrity; park operation and administration; assessment and development of recreational areas; private and public programs in forest recreation; eco-tourism; Indigenous-led tourism and protected areas; and safety in the backcountry.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the governing principles and mandates of park, heritage and conservation areas (international regional, provincial, federal and Indigenous-run)
- Explain and discuss selected current environmental and land use issues and initiatives in BC with reference to multiple perspectives, including eco-tourism.
- Explain and communicate the concept of ecological integrity and natural disturbances in managed conservation areas, and the relevant operational plans.
- Understand the application of relevant sections of the Provincial and National Parks Acts and other pertinent park-related legislation.
- Explain management solutions for a variety of impact monitoring, visitor management and risk management situations.
- Demonstrate safety, competence, and good judgement and apply concepts of risk management to outdoor situations.
- Apply principles of integrated resource use on protected and non-protected lands (ecosystem-based management).
- Assess how Indigenous-led protected areas are stewarded, including examples of Indigenous Guardian programs.
