Course Overview
This introductory course will provide students with an overview of the various data types and to the software tools used by law enforcement agencies to create, manage, manipulate and query data. Students will be exposed to the methods for efficiently searching, retrieving, mining and manipulating data from police databases, including computer-aided dispatch and record management systems. In particular, the Police Records Information Management Environment (PRIME-BC) will be examined. Students should be familiar with the Windows Operating System and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, in particular Access and Excel, as well as familiarity with equivalent Corel products.

- Admission to a Forensics credential program or permission of the Program Head.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate data, identify and utilize tools and procedures to create, manage and manipulate data in a law enforcement setting.
- Evaluate data integrity and validity.
- Define exempt versus non-exempt activities relating to FOIPOP.
- Apply structured query language statements for law enforcement analytic purposes.
- Construct regular and complex expressions to conduct rigorous searches.
- Formulate and manipulate concepts to perform data-mining of operationally-valid information.
- Design MS Access and Excel to perform data translations, mapping and data-cleaning functions.
