Course Overview
This course builds upon New Marine Construction for Welders - Levels 1 and 2, and will prepare welders for new construction shipbuilding. The quality demands for new construction shipbuilding leave most new-hire welders coming up short with the non-marine-specific skillset they bring with them to the shipyard. This generally results in significant cost to the employer in terms of time, money, production, repair and rework. This course will also benefit those welders working in ship repair. This course will focus on attitude, quality control, weld faults, workmanship, following a WPS, weld process control, grinding, FCAW ceramic backed joints, weld sequencing and fillet size. At the conclusion of the course, the successful student will demonstrate an understanding of the quality demands placed on welders in new steel-hulled ship construction and will exhibit skillsets in FCAW that will meet DNV/CSA code criteria. This course is intended for a Journeyperson or an industry recommended apprentice.
Prerequisite(s)
- S in WELD 0290
- Completion of the Welding Foundation program or Welding Apprentice level 1 & 2, and minimum one year of work experience as a Welder. Possession of an all position CWB Fluxcore certification would be an asset. Or permission from the Chief Instructor in lieu of one or more prerequisites.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Perform ceramic backed, 1G, 2G, and 3G weld joints as well as all position closed root welds.
- Examine weld faults.
- Follow a welding procedure specification.
- Demonstrate weld process control.
- Display a skillset in FCAW that meets DNV/CSA code criteria.
- Manipulate FCAW ceramic backed joints.
- Display an appreciation for the quality of workmanship and demands placed on welders in new steel hulled ship construction.
- Utilize basic visual inspection techniques for fillet welds.
- Utilize basic applied metallurgy techniques.
- Perform proper grinding and dressing techniques while demonstrating proper safety techniques.
- Describe terms and definitions in shipbuilding.
- Apply blueprint reading skills in relation to shipbuilding.
- Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot welding equipment.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of weld procedure specifications.
