Course Overview
This course introduces common measurement procedures used in resource industries, with emphasis on field navigation, basic surveying and topographic mapping. Topics include the care and use of common field measuring equipment, field note taking, measurement and error adjustments, field traversing and field mapping. This course emphasizes field applications and hands-on activities.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Practice appropriate field equipment care and calibration.
- Sight and follow bearings using a hand compass.
- Set the declination adjustment on a hand compass.
- Detect local attraction and record in field notes for adjustment.
- Measure distances using chaining, taping, pacing and estimation techniques.
- Calculate horizontal distances using trig functions and slope tables.
- Calculate changes in elevation using slope percent, degrees and measured distances.
- Record field traverse data including bearings, distances, elevations and field mapping data.
- Perform a simple closed traverse.
- Plot and draw an 'adjusted' traverse.
- Describe common sources of errors in traverse surveys.
- Quantify the amount of 'error' on a closed traverse and make appropriate data adjustments.
- Produce a map, drawn to scale, based on field observations and recorded field notes.
- Locate potential tie points on an aerial photograph and map.
- Determine the height of objects on level or sloped ground using a chain, tape and clinometer.
- Perform a simple differential levelling survey.
- Establish a fixed area plot for determination of value/hectare.
- Collect topographic field data along a traverse
- Collect basic GPS data.
- Plot UTM & Lat/Long coordinates.
