Course details
This course is developed to comply with the requirements of the Marine Personnel Regulations on minimum training in personal survival techniques and fire fighting for Canadian seafarers sailing on board passenger vessels, workboats, or fishing vessels engaged on a voyage in Canadian waters. It also replaces the old MED A1 and MED A2 courses.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- List and describe the various hazards and emergencies, and prevention strategies associated with the marine environment and ships.
- Prepare for emergencies and how to deal with these, and be able to provide assistance in fire and abandonment situations.
- Use the various types of lifesaving and fire-fighting appliances.
- Explain the factors associated with sea survival.
- Identify each signalling device, their uses, and characteristics.
- Describe the uses of rescue equipment, and use the same.
- Inspect and maintain emergency equipment, and have the knowledge to maintain the appropriate record-keeping procedures for safety equipment.
- Control passengers and give them the assistance needed to survive an emergency, and also enable crew members of passenger vessels to plan, organize, and carry out safety drills with the passengers, in order that the passengers will be aware of safety equipment and procedures.
