Course Overview
A course which provides the required theoretical knowledge to persons with approved sea service to enable those persons to act as Master of a passenger carrying vessel up to 60 gross tons and fishing Master fourth class.
Prerequisite(s)
- For Master Limited - Completion of 2 months service on a ship of not less than five tons gross tonnage. For FM IV-class - Completion of 12 months service on not less than 5 gross tonnage; and engaged on voyages beyond partially smooth water limits.

- Explain terminology, abbreviation used in nautical chart.
- Explain the practical effects of chart projection.
- Identify Canadian aids to navigation.
- Plot latitude and longitude.
- Plot bearing and range on the chart.
- Measure the course and distance from one position to another.
- Describe the construction of magnetic compass.
- Apply variation and deviation to obtain compass error.
- Use deviation card to find compass and magnetic courses.
- Determine compass error from transit bearings.
- Compare magnetic and gyro compasses.
- Calculate time, speed and distance equation.
- Lay courses between given positions.
- Plot dead reckoning and estimated position.
- Calculate tide and current predictions.
- Find set, rate and drift.
- Apply leeway and a current.
- Determine course to steer.
- Determine course and speed made good.
- Determine fuel requirements for a coastal passage.
- Navigation Safety:
- Explain application of the International Collision regulations with Canadian modifications.
- Describe operational guidance for officers in charge of a navigational watch.
