Course Overview
Prepares participants for Transport Canada examinations (040, 061, oral exam) leading to the Master Limited certificate, which will qualify the holder to operate a small passenger vessel up to 60 GRT within Area 1 waters. Course also covers material for candidates preparing for 'First Mate Limited Coastal' certificate.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the Mercator Projection.
- Define and plot latitude and longitude.
- Define time bearing and a nautical mile and plot a bearing and distance off on the chart.
- Measure the course and distance from one position to another.
- Describe the principles of a magnetic compass.
- Define variation and deviation.
- Correction variation for current year.
- Use deviation card to find compass and magnetic courses.
- Find a deadreckoning position and determine set and drift.
- Use of a Gyro Compass and application of gyro error.
- Application of leeway and a current.
- Determine position by a running fix and four point bearing.
- Describe the buoys used on the Canadian coast.
- Determine fuel requirements for a coastal passage.
- Define main terms used in the regulations.
- Identify lights and shapes as specified for different vessels.
- Use sound signaling for clear and restricted visibility situations.
- Apply steering and sailing rules.
- State the various types of signals prescribed to indicate distress and need of assistance.
- Explain the basic principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch, watch at anchor, and watch in port.
