Course Overview
The course contains the theory material fundamental to succeed in a full lumber grading course. It includes tree growth, wood structure, characteristic identification and classification, classification of end-use products, species identification, and moisture content calculations.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe tree growth and wood structure for local commercial softwood.
- Identify species and species grouping for commercial softwoods both rough and surfaced.
- Classify natural, manufacturing, and seasoning characteristics as defined by the R List and NLGA grading rulebooks.
- Classify lumber samples into product classes.
- Describe key water wood relationships.
- Calculate per-cent moisture content.
