Course Overview
This course builds on topics in ELEX 1103 and explains the fundamentals of modern wired and wireless data communication networks, primarily those used in local area networks. Topics include: detailed coverage of the OSI networking model, access control and error control principles, operation and management of 802.3 LAN, switching and VLANs; Spanning tree, internetworking devices, advanced TCP/IP protocols, Wireless LAN 802.11, introduction to servers and data centers, network security, and VOIP in a LAN environment.

- Compare the data link protocols used in the existing wired and wireless local area networks in terms of framing, access control and error control.
- Explain spanning tree and virtual LAN in detail.
- Setup spanning tree and virtual LAN on switches.
- Analyze the operation of interface protocols associated with local area networks
- Outline the operation and functionalities associated with internetworking devices known as switches, bridges, routers, and gateways.
- Perform IP sub netting for a practical situation.
- Explain the capabilities of TCP in terms of process to process delivery of data, error control, flow control and congestion control.
- Configure internetworking devices to establish a small network.
- Configure NAT server and DHCP server on a router.
