Course Overview
Topics will include governance issues related to aboriginal rights, and the delegation of power among local, provincial and federal governments. Important legal principles and terms will be discussed to aid students in the interpretation of recent decisions. Students will be able to describe the role courts and administrative boards play in the interpretation of government policy and legislation. The various branches of law (environmental, criminal, aboriginal, administrative, business) will be discussed in terms of their application to sustainable resource management. The link between the various professional associations, and role ethics and professionalism play in interpreting job responsibilities, will also form a significant component of the course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Contrast the scope of power of provincial and federal jurisdictions related to resource management.
- Provide an overview of the provincial and federal court systems.
- Illustrate how the different branches of law relate to sustainable resource management.
- Discuss the role court and administrative board decisions play in the interpretation of resource policy and management.
- Discuss the role the court system has played in the interpretation of aboriginal rights as they related to sustainable resource management.
- Explain key legal concepts related to resource management, and the review of case briefs.
- Illustrate the principles of environmental and professional ethics, and their impact of day to day activities.
- Discuss the purpose of professional associations, and their responsibilities for ethics and professionalism among their members.
- Discuss the interrelationships between the responsibilities of various professional associations related to resource management in the province.
