Course Overview
This course presents the fundamentals of laser-scanning and reality capture technologies, introduces proper planning and data collection methods, and explores a variety of products and deliverables created from massive point cloud datasets collected by laser-scanning technology. Students are exposed to industry-standard hardware and software solutions employed by the geomatics industry to collect, process, and model point cloud datasets.
Registration requirements
Departmental approval is required to register for this course. You must have approval from the department to register. Students accepted into a program can register directly.
Domestic fees
$1,175.85
International fees are typically 3.4 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the concepts of laser-scanning and reality-capture technology and their application in geomatics.
- Differentiate among the various laser-scanning methods.
- Identify the purpose and required deliverables of a particular laser-scanning project.
- Process and visualize point cloud data using industry-standard software.
- Determine the survey and control network strategy required to collect data in a given scenario.
- Transfer and review collected data for quality-control purposes using industry software tools.
- Perform registration, such as visual alignment, cloud-to-cloud alignment and cloud-to-target alignment techniques, using industry software tools.
- Generate derived product deliverables, such as topography plans, analysis for the quality of BIM/ REVIT models, and 3D visualizations of point cloud data.
