Course Overview
Students who are struggling with English get access to supports, which can include tutorials, coaching, one-on-one, and small group lessons to provide remedial strategies to help students succeed in their Communication courses and programs. Students develop skills for navigating cultural expectations and nuances as well as develop increased understanding of English language. In addition to developing students' language skills, the sessions include the extra practice they need in writing and presentation skills. LS tutorials and coaching are modelled along the lines of the Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English for Special Purposes approaches to language development, in which language learning is contextualized to the students' field of study and is closely integrated with the tasks in the regular Communication class. The outcomes in Language Support provide opportunities for learners to develop skills through practice and immediate feedback from experts (in keeping with current pedagogy and BCIT's applied models). Language Support instructors identify areas for language development through expert observations and needs analysis; work with students to set their own learning goals; identify learning resources to facilitate language development; and assess achievement of individual learning goals.
