Course Overview
This course prepares students for the role of dry kiln supervisor or dry kiln operator. It covers commercial lumber drying technology and management. Topics include the theory of lumber seasoning, drying systems, controllers, schedules and scheduling, correct operating practice, tools for assessing kiln performance, and kiln drying quality control. A practical kiln-drying project will be carried out. Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will earn an industry Forintek Dry Kiln Operators Certificate.

- Wood 2140 and completion of Tier 2 courses.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe the mechanism of moisture changes in wood.
- Calculate moisture content and shrinkage related problems.
- Monitor a charge of lumber as it dries.
- Apply quality control procedures to a charge of dry lumber.
- Identify the causes of lumber drying defect and steps to be taken to reduce these.
- Complete the Forintek kiln course.
