Course Overview
This half day seminar will provide law enforcement, correctional, health care and other related professionals with an introduction to the major mental disorders and their relationship to criminal behavior. Topics will include violence in relation to psychotic breaks, homicides among the mentally ill, criminal psychopathy and serial killing. A case study method will be utilized in demonstrating the difference among the major disorders, psychosis and psychopathy.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize the major mental disorders and their relation to criminal behavior based on empirical research.
- Identify the known risk factors for violence among the mentally ill.
- Identify the role of psychosis in homicides among the mentally ill via the case study method.
- Identify the difference between the criminal psychotic and the criminal psychopath.
- Demonstrate familiarity with leading research in the field of psychopathy and related case studies of psychopathy among serial killers.
- Recall case studies specific to the analysis of violence among the mentally ill.
