Course Overview
This half day seminar will provide law enforcement, correctional, health care and other related professionals with an introduction to the legal and institutional structure for the care and control of the mentally ill accused and convicted in Canada. Civil commitment, hospital care, provincial and federal correctional Institutions, including Special Handling Units and Regional Treatment Centers will be reviewed as will the NCRMD and the Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals in Canada. The ongoing issue of avoiding criminalization of the mentally ill will be discussed as will innovative practices such as mental health courts and specialized mental health treatment centers.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify the various institutional structures for the care and control of the mentally ill accused and/or criminally convicted population.
- Be familiar with the various goals and purposes of Canadian mental health facilities and special "care in-custody" institutions and other health care facilities including civil and correctional facilities. Students will be specifically familiar with the role of Forensic Hospitals for the Criminal Accused in Canada
- Identify factors in the criminalization of the mentally ill population.
- Be familiar with innovative practices in criminal justice for the mentally ill such as mental health, drug, community courts and specialized treatment centers.
