Course Overview
This course draws from the fields of Visual Design, Visual Communication, Graphic Design, and Visual Literacy to introduce students to principles that will aid them in producing effective images that impart specific meaning to targeted audiences. The course also extends those principles to the areas of visual storytelling, pre-visualization for production, and production design to further enhance students’ skills in communicating meaning through video production. The course covers diverse topics such as elements and principles of art and design, photographic manipulation, and story.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the meaning, content, subject, relationship, context, production, and audience of specific images.
- Articulate the need for and purpose of a particular image that communicates a specific meaning.
- Identify and discuss elements and principles of art as they relate to visual composition and how that composition relates to meaning and purpose of images.
- Identify situations when textual information is needed (e.g., captions, keys, or other graphics) in visual media.
- Analyze the effectiveness of their own and others’ images and discuss the results of their analysis to validate their interpretation.
- Evaluate and revise own visual media based on given criteria, industry conventions, and discussion with others.
