Course Overview
This course lays the groundwork for learning how to assemble material in order to communicate effectively in writing. It is presented in two parts so students can master good writing techniques before applying them specifically to letters, memos, etc.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Module 1 - Introduction to Practical Writing
- Define the five characteristics of practical writing.
- Complete an assignment using a plan sheet with the five characteristics.
Module 2 - Deciding What To Say
- Systematically determine the exact purpose for writing a document.
- Formulate the main idea of the document.
- Choose the right details.
Module 3 - Organizing Information
- Use questions to organize information.
- Organize main ideas effectively.
- Organize details effectively.
- Organize longer documents effectively.
Module 4 - Using Presentation Techniques
- Use layout and white space to indicate the relationships between the various parts of a document.
- Use simple listing techniques to make your writing effective.
- Use headings to show organizational patterns and make information easy to locate and read.
- Use numbering techniques to categorize information.
Module 5 - Writing Clear Sentences
- Select effective subjects for sentences.
- Use subjects to control focus.
- Write clear, concise sentences which show clear relationships.
Module 6 - Writing Effective Paragraphs
- Focus your paragraphs using main idea sentences.
- Focus details in paragraphs.
- Show relationships within paragraphs.
