Course Overview
This course provides a general introduction to the structural design process. Topics include limit states design philosophy, determination of dead, live, snow, and wind load effects according to national standards, load paths and selection of structural systems.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the philosophy of Limit States Design.
- Explain the overall structural design process.
- Quantify dead loads, occupancy loads, snow loads, and wind loads in accordance with current NBCC and BCBC Division B Part 4 criteria.
- Trace vertical load paths through basic structural systems.
- Trace lateral load paths through basic lateral load resisting systems.
- Identify and calculate all applicable design loads (excluding seismic) and the resulting internal forces for designing the structural members of a significant structure located throughout Canada.
