NSPN 7745 is course two of a two-part introductory course on human sexuality in the context of nursing practice. The objective of this course is to expand on the concepts learned and applied in NSPN 7740. In this course students will have opportunities to build upon previous learning and existing competencies in the field of sexual- health rehabilitation. This course will utilize the concepts and models learned in NSPN 7740 as a foundation to more advanced knowledge and skills in sexual health rehabilitation including: (1) An in­depth exploration of issues faced by our patient populations (2) Exposure to modes of therapies and treatments for sexual health concerns (3) Instruction on methods for sexual interviewing and history taking (4) Discussion of educational and counselling theories and methods.

Learning Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Utilize a comprehensive sexual health assessment framework in predicting patients’ sexual health concerns.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the biopsychosocial models of sexual desire. Describe common treatment modalities for sexual dysfunction.
  • Describe common sexual consequences of congenital or acquired medical/surgical conditions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reproductive health (fertility, contraception and safer sex) and considerations for different patient populations.
  • Describe the role of motor and sensory influences on sexual health. Explain the effects of bowel and bladder functioning on sexual health.
  • Assess and analyze sexual self – view and self ­ esteem and how this relates to healthy sexuality.
  • Relate the influence on partnership and parenting issues to sexual function and satisfaction. For each parameter of the framework, demonstrate ways to address each aspect and thereby promote the principles of sexual rehab.
  • Conduct a sexual history taking session, demonstrating principles of sexual history taking and therapeutic counselling technique.
  • Display ability to promote sexual health rehabilitation through counselling and patient education and collaborative relationships with other health care professionals.
