Course Overview
This course equips participants with the introductory understanding of ducted and ductless air to air heat pump systems for residential applications. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of heat pump technology, system components, design configurations, installation standards, and strategies to enhance system longevity and sustainability. The objective of this course is to help students become proficient at supporting the work of qualified tradespeople ensure operations and maintenance of small residential heat pumps. Designed specifically for facilities personnel, maintenance workers, and building operators who are not tradespeople, the course covers foundational concepts of heat pump technology, system components, and operation. In this context, participants will learn to explain system operations, identify performance and operating constraints, and anticipate user support and maintenance requirements. This course will provide students with essential theory and applied knowledge of residential heat pump systems required for subsequent hands-on learning to perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and system diagnostics to support communications with contractors for advanced repairs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain basic principles of heat pumps including the refrigeration cycle.
- Explain the function of main components of the heat pump system (compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, indoor/outdoor units).
- Compare residential air to air heat pump system types (centralized vs. decentralized, ducted vs. ductless, single-zone vs. multi-zone), controllability, cost, and general maintenance requirements.
- Explain how to program and operate a thermostat for efficient temperature control including scenarios with supplementary/auxiliary and backup heating.
- Interpret manufacturer and contractor installation, service, and maintenance documentation.
