Course Overview
This course gives students the necessary tools to understand and interpret the functioning of mass communication in today's Canadian society. It examines the use of mass media technology to access and disseminate information and entertainment, and provides students with strategies to analyze the impact of mass communication and to critically question the creation and control of information and entertainment. Through class discussion, videos, and group work, students will gain an understanding of the nature of mass communication and its impact on their lives.

Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Outline the role of mass communication in contemporary society.
- Identify the variety of media through which information reaches them.
- Describe the theoretical, practical, historical, social and cultural contexts of media, information, and technology.
- Analyze factors that influence the use of mass media by governments, industry and business in order to understand why and how mass communication is manipulated to accomplish various goals.
- Analyze the impact of mass media on their own lives by examining the processes and policies of mass communication.
- Describe the impact of contemporary technology, particularly the internet, on the changing process of mass communication today.
- Compose a research-based project paper.
