Course details

Introduces computer and telecommunication applications in health care from a technical and management perspective. Describes the value of high quality data in managing patients and institutions effectively. Introduces participants to the Electronic Health Record, Telehealth, and the RFP process. Explores an expanded definition of technology and identifies challenges in managing information technology in healthcare. Enables course participants to compare their own skills to the role of a senior information technology manager in healthcare, using a variety of self-assessment tools and job descriptions. Assists participants to select either the HI or HTM specialization within the Health Informatics Technology Management program.

  • Discuss technological methods and policy approaches relevant to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Explain the benefits of telehealth applications.
  • Describe the current state of telehealth in Canada.
  • Explain drivers and inhibitors for the adoption of telehealth applications.
  • Identify the technological requirements for typical telehealth systems.
  • Identify emerging technologies that could affect health care delivery, such as wireless, e-commerce, and bioinformatics.
  • Identify authoritative sources of literature and obtain information through online literature search.
  • Identify critical success factors of a health informatics Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
  • Explain the steps of an RFP process.
  • Identify organizational factors that promote the role of the health technology manager.
  • Identify the skills and responsibilities of a Chief Information Officer in health care.
  • Identify common job titles for people who manage information technology in healthcare.
  • Analyze your skills and experience in relation to the health technology manager role.
  • Create a vision of your role in managing information technology in healthcare.
