Course Overview
Introduces health care professionals to the knowledge and skills of information processing and the information and communication technology necessary to support their role as information technology users. Explores the knowledge and skill levels within three domains - methodology and technology for the processing of data, information and knowledge, and health system organization and informatics. Assists learners in developing competencies recommended by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and the National Nursing Informatics Project.

Learning Outcomes
HINS 5205 facilitates the development of an informatics knowledge base to promote the efficient and responsible use of information processing, methodology and information and communication technology. Using a problem-based cross-disciplinary approach, this course addresses introductory and selected intermediate competencies recommended by the IMIA.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Define basic informatics terminology.
- Describe the methodology and technology for the processing of data, information and knowledge in health care.
- Identify the general characteristics of a variety of health information systems.
- Efficiently and responsibly use information and communication technology (ICT).
- Use information technology to support practice evaluation and evidence-based practice.
- Analyze the roles and responsibilities of evolving health information careers.
- Examine professional responsibilities related to the legal and ethical aspects of health informatics.
- Describe methods and tools to support health informatics education and training.
- Examine the application of change management principles and methods to health informatics projects.
- Describe the informatics culture within a specific health discipline.
