Course Overview
This course builds on concepts and methodologies taught in previous studio courses, introducing students to basic commercial space planning and design, Students will research, conceptualize, analyze and develop workable solutions to small commercial spaces. Students will plan interiors with a focus on retail spaces, food establishments and offices. Students will be required to document on-site observations and analyze their findings. Students will have the opportunity to use various visual communication methods with an emphasis on strengthening three-dimensional visualization of space.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Prepare and analyse research directly related to the specified project criteria.
- Demonstrate the specific functions and requirements of retail, food and office spaces.
- Apply the psychology of retail sales to design solutions.
- Develop concepts and demonstrate the design process for each project in a sketchbook/journal.
- Write clear and concise concept statements relating to the given project criteria.
- Develop branding through signage & packaging design to establish a strong corporate identity.
- Prepare layouts that support functionality, creativity and appropriate design solutions.
- Plan basic workstation layouts within an office using systems furniture.
- Produce floor plans and reflected ceiling plans to visually communicate design solutions.
- Produce elevations, paraline and perspectives to further explore design details and three-dimensional space.
- Be aware of the process that a typical commercial design project goes through from beginning to end.
- Be familiar with barrier free washroom requirements.
