Course Overview
Integrated Solid Waste Management gives the student an overview of municipal solid waste management including collection, transfer, transport, and disposal. Methods of processing, basic disposal facilities, disposal options, and the economic and environmental issues of solid waste management will be covered in this course. In addition, this course provides the student with relevant information about municipal solid waste reduction and recycling systems including technology, communications, financial aspects, and numerical modelling. Topics include: the basis and impact of the 3 Rs on waste management systems, industry examples, recycling and recovery of paper, cardboard, metals, plastic, oil, glass, and other commodities, new uses of recycling and recovery, the basics of composting and other organic waste management methods, design of plants, and markets.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Understand municipal solid waste management with respect to its history, physical properties, and associated critical considerations in the technical and economic evaluation of emerging technologies.
- Outline municipal solid waste operations with respect to collection and transfer systems as well as landfills.
- Outline modern processes for municipal solid waste incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis, including the fundamental technology required to ensure operational effectiveness within acceptable environmental parameters.
- Apply the principles of Demand-Side Management within the 5 Rs waste management hierarchy, in the context of education requirements, incentives programs, legislation compliance, and appropriate technology.
- Calculate annual costs for capital, operation, and maintenance of recycling programs and equipment.
- Outline the processes involved in the collection, processing, and recycling of various materials, including aluminum, automobiles, glass, newspapers, corrugated cardboard, and plastics.
- Understand the design and operation of residential, commercial, and demolition/construction recycling programs, identifying the barriers to their implementation.
- Apply the fundamentals of the composting process, including moisture, temperature, pH, C:N ratio, etc..
