Course Overview
Industrial wastewater treatment course topics include characteristics of industrial wastewater, industrial wastewater survey, waste minimization, pre-treatment requirements, flow and quality, quality equalization, neutralization, and oil-water separation. In addition, this course also examines physical/chemical unit processes including chemical coagulation, chemical precipitation of heavy metals, chemical phosphorus removal, adsorption, ion exchange, membrane separation, chemical oxidation, and gas transfer. Practical and operational aspects will be emphasized.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Assess how the regulatory requirements impact industrial wastewater treatment and municipal facilities.
- Evaluate the impact of key industrial wastewater contaminants (heavy metals, other inorganic constituents, synthetic organic compounds, etc.) on the receiving environment.
- Apply the techniques of industrial wastewater survey.
- Assess the economic benefits of waste minimization by evaluating industrial wastewater treatment options.
- Justify the need for quality equalization, neutralization, and oil-water separation.
- Apply key design parameters to size equalization, neutralization, and oil-water separation facilities.
- Discuss the principles of chemical coagulation and precipitation for the removal of suspended solids and heavy metal and phosphorus.
- Apply key design criteria for sizing treatment system components.
- Design chemical feed systems that will allow the estimation of chemical sludge production.
- Discuss the principles of ion exchange.
- Plot adsorption isotherms and breakthrough curves (adsorption and ion exchange).
- Calculate adsorptive and ion exchange capacities.
- Categorize the principles of membrane processes.
- Examine the concept of breakpoint chlorination based on chemical oxidation and how it impacts ammonia removal.
- Illustrate the principles of gas transfer and its application in air stripping.
