Course Overview
Focuses on the development of knowledge and skills that will translate into safe and effective clinical practice in accordance with available standards and regulations. Examines the delivery of patient care using methods such as telephone computer, Internet/e-mail, interactive video, wireless handheld devices, electronic patient records, and remote monitoring devices. Considers the role of the clinician within the emerging field of e-health and telehealth applications. Also addresses the use of information systems and decision support software to minimize the risks related to clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes
This course aims at providing participants with an opportunity to explore the complex nature of CIS in an effort to gain the knowledge and skills to participate in the various aspects of selecting, implementing and using Clinical Information Systems.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant is expected to be able to:
- Define: Electronic Patient Record.
- Define: Electronic Health Record.
- Define: Telemedicine.
- Define: Telehealth.
- Define: Clinical Information System.
- Explain the advantages of a CIS.
- Explain the disadvantages a CIS.
- Discuss your of experience using a clinical information system (Equicare).
- Describe the components commonly included in a CIS.
- Describe how these systems relate to one another to form an integrated CIS.
- Discuss the importance of standards.
- List and discuss the feasibility of Anderson's nine principles of privacy and confidentiality.
- Describe the four phases involved in a CIS implementation.
- Describe the importance of executive sponsorship to a CIS implementation.
- Describe the issues of change management as it relates to the implementation of a CIS.
- Describe the issues of Human Resource / Labour relations as it relates to a CIS implementation.
- List seven (7) factors that are consistently observed with successful CIS implementations.
- Research and describe the emerging trends in clinical information systems.
