Course Overview
This course is the first of two courses providing foundational anatomy and physiology required for the Medical Radiography Technology program. It provides an in-depth exploration of skeletal system anatomy and physiology (with the exception of the cranium), as well as anatomy and physiology of the select major organs of the thorax and abdomen (organs of the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems) relevant to Medical Radiography Technology. The course content is delivered in a hybrid format of lecture, lab and online learning.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand how the four main tissues of the body (epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissues) contribute to the structure and function of body tissues and organs
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal system
- Identify the bones, anatomical landmarks, joints and relational anatomy of the appendicular and axial skeleton (except cranium) on conventional X-ray images.
- Describe the histology of bone tissue
- Understand the processes of ossification, bone growth, bone remodeling and calcium homeostasis
- Understand skeletal muscle physiology in the context of movement of bones and joints, and also as a comparison to cardiac muscle physiology
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the following major organs of the thorax and abdomen:
- Heart and great vessels
- Respiratory tract and lungs
- GI tract and accessory organs of digestion
- Identify major structures and organs of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis on conventional X-ray images.
- Connect and apply anatomy and physiology knowledge to the the analysis and interpretation of conventional X-ray images and CT scans in different body planes.
Effective as of Winter 2023
