Course Overview
This course introduces key aspects of hydrogen safety, storage, and infrastructure. Learners explore hydrogen’s properties affecting safety, risk management, and system design. Topics include storage methods—compressed gas, liquid hydrogen, metal hydrides, and underground options—along with their applications and limitations. The course also covers hydrogen distribution systems, refueling stations, and infrastructure design in industrial and urban contexts. Emphasis is placed on safety standards, regulations, and real-world case studies to highlight best practices. It is suited for learners pursuing careers in clean energy, engineering, and environmental sectors where hydrogen technologies are increasingly important.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the key physical and chemical properties of hydrogen that influence safety, storage, and infrastructure design.
- Identify major safety risks associated with hydrogen production, storage, transport, and end-use applications.
- Apply industry-standard safety protocols and risk mitigation strategies in hydrogen systems and facilities.
- Compare and evaluate different hydrogen storage methods (e.g., compressed gas, liquid hydrogen, metal hydrides, underground storage) based on application, efficiency, and safety.
- Describe the components and design considerations of hydrogen distribution and refueling infrastructure.
- Interpret applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements for hydrogen systems at local, national, and international levels (with an emphasis on Canadian safety standards)
- Evaluate codes and standards required to embark on a hydrogen project in Production, Mobility and Storage in Canada and review of harmonization of codes and standards across regions.
- Assess case studies of hydrogen infrastructure projects to identify best practices and lessons learned.
- Demonstrate awareness of emerging trends and innovations in hydrogen storage and infrastructure technologies.
