Course details

This course meets the Transport Canada High Voltage Safety Training per TP 15326 (05/2016), Part 4: High-Voltage Endorsement, and the requirements of STCW 2010, Manila Amendments (Tables A-111/2 and A-111/6), for electrical, electronic, and control engineering education and training at the Management Level. In addition, this course meets the requirements of IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4 competence ‘Design features of high-voltage installations’. The intended audience is: Chief Engineer Officers, Second Engineer Officers, ETOs, and marine electricians who will be supervising, operating, and implementing high voltage (HV) systems on vessels with electrical equipment of 1000 V or higher. This course combines classroom and practical training, with the emphasis on safe working practices and procedures that should be followed by any person responsible for HV marine systems. BCIT’s main campus has a fully-equipped, high voltage electrical lab that will be used during practical exercises and assessments. A 6.6 kV Diesel Electric simulator at the marine campus will be used for HV operational training.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the advantages of high voltage systems and insulating systems on vessels [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Explain safety requirements for operation of high voltage systems on vessels [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.2)].
  • Describe the design features of high voltage equipment including circuit breakers, cables, and fuses [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Explain the design, generation, distribution, safety features, and application of distribution equipment and associated protective devices used in high voltage distribution systems [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Isolate high voltage equipment and apply appropriate precautions and working practices.
  • Manage operational safety of high voltage installations [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.2)].
  • Perform 5 kV insulation resistance and polarization index tests on HV equipment.
  • Perform HV switching, isolation, and earthing [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Consider hazards when taking immediate action, under fault conditions.
  • Explain how Pulse Width Modulation and Synchro-Converter power converters controls the speed of a propulsion motor [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Describe terms associated with certification of HV PPE [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.2)].
  • Use HV PPE, insulating bars, mates, earthing cables, and HV testers [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.2)].

In addition, using guidance from section B-III/2 of the STCW Code, upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe functional, operational, and safety requirements for a marine high-voltage system [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Assign suitably qualified personnel to carry out maintenance and repair of high-voltage switchgear of various types [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Execute remedial action necessary during faults in a high-voltage system [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Produce a switching strategy for isolating components of a high-voltage system [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Select suitable apparatus for isolation and test high-voltage equipment [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Carry out a switching and isolation procedure on a marine high-voltage system, complete with safety documentation [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
  • Perform tests of insulation resistance and polarization index on high-voltage equipment [IMO model course 7.02, section 2.1.4(4.1)].
