Course details

This course will provide you with the skills necessary to work safely with the High Voltage systems found on commercial vehicles such as heavy-duty trucks and buses. You will know which safety standards are applicable for mechanics working with electric vehicles and how to protect yourself and others on systems up to 600 volts, including the use of correct PPE, tools and equipment. A system overview will provide fundamental knowledge of ground fault protection circuits, HV components, cabling and support systems. A final examination is held at the end of the course.​ Delivered fully online through a self – guided online learning platform and instructor led online virtual classroom. You will need to register and log in to complete the assigned reading and quizzes prior to the start of the virtual class where you will meet other students and your Instructor. Self guided online training estimated 4 hours. Scheduled instructor led training through zoom 6 hours. The virtual classroom is structured much like a typical class with regular breaks, group work and independent assignments throughout the day.

Learning Outcomes

​Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe safety regulations and their importance to working with High voltage (HV) electric vehicles.
  • Describe the SAE/CSA safety standards and ratings.
  • Describe the dangers of High Voltage electrocution.
  • Demonstrate the testing and use of Personal protective equipment (PPE) for HV vehicles.
  • Identify the difference between standard and insulated HV tools and equipment.
  • Identify the procedure for establishing a HV work area in the workshop.
  • Identify EV components and their basic function.
  • Identify HV safety disconnects and how to verify a vehicle is de-energized.
  • Identify HV ground fault safety systems and procedures.
  • Identify HV electric vehicle support systems.
  • Describe safety precautions for lifting or hoisting a HV vehicle.
  • Describe safety precautions when working on a vehicle that has been in a collision.
  • Describe the safety procedures when charging HV electric vehicles.
