Course Overview
Healthcare Horizons: Career Exploration is a first-of-its-kind, fully online, healthcare career exploration course for BC high school students. This competency-based course introduces students in grades 10 to 12 to diverse healthcare career pathways while building foundational knowledge of Canada's healthcare system and essential workplace skills. Through guided self-assessment, exploration of five healthcare career clusters, and interactive learning activities, students develop career clarity alongside core competencies in patient-centred care, professionalism, communication, clinical safety, health information literacy, and healthcare technology, culminating in a personalized education and career action plan. An optional one-day immersive experience will be offered at BCIT's Health Sciences Centre in Burnaby, where students will tour state-of-the-art facilities, participate in hands-on activities, and connect with instructors and current students.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the basic structure of Canada's healthcare system, including key legislation, determinants of health, and principles of equity in healthcare delivery.
- Evaluate diverse healthcare career pathways across multiple career clusters and develop a personalized career action plan aligned with individual interests, values, and strengths.
- Demonstrate basic patient-centred care principles, cultural safety practices, and equity considerations.
- Demonstrate basic professionalism and ethical decision-making for healthcare settings.
- Clinical Awareness & Safety Foundations. Demonstrate foundational clinical awareness, including basic vital sign interpretation, physical assessment principles, and infection prevention and control practices.
- Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques with patients and effective interprofessional communication.
- Produce accurate healthcare documentation using appropriate medical terminology and professional standards.
- Evaluate health information sources for credibility, accuracy, relevance, and bias.
- Explain the general roles and responsibilities of common healthcare team members and describe how interprofessional collaboration contributes to safe, effective patient care.
- Analyze a type of healthcare technology or innovation for its impact on patient care, safety, and healthcare delivery.
