Course Overview
Course content will be introduced through a survey of the global and regional context for green roof implementation. Student research in construction and implementation of green roof technology will be applied in a course project. The project delivery will synthesize landscape, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Case studies and student project will facilitate evaluation of cost and the project contribution to sustainable development. The BCIT Green Roofs Research Facility will provide supporting learning resources and technology transfer.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Present the option of a green roof to project owners defining overall contribution to sustainable development.
- Evaluate a building project needs and opportunities for green roof implementation.
- Propose suitable selection of green roof systems for different application, extensive, intensive or combination.
- Support the green roof proposal with a building & site level benefit analysis (social benefits to stormwater source control).
- Interpret growing medium properties and planting selection.
- Apply basic principals of landscape design to a green roof project.
- Resolve roofscape design by incorporating architectural code requirements and assessing structural, mechanical implications.
- Contribute to the integrated design process as a member of the consultant team supporting green roof implementation.
- Evaluate and select roof materials and systems for project needs.
- Provide required research and material documentation to support specification development.
- Prepare appropriate design and construction details.
- Assess construction cost, proportion to project cost and life cycle cost of green roof implementation.
- Evaluate green roof contribution to projects overall green building rating.
