Course Overview
Franchising is one of the most dynamic business growth vehicles available in Canada today. Over the past five years there has been a 10% increase in franchise listings, and one in 14 working Canadians is now directly employed by a franchise operation. These statistics represent hundreds of billions of dollars of economic activity. This course will explore the fundamental principles of managing, creating and buying a franchise. You’ll gain a broad foundational knowledge and skills in the field of franchise management while preparing for further study in specific aspects of franchising that will assist in better understanding the pros and cons of the franchise business model. Upon completion of the course you’ll have examined and discussed insights that will enable you to better manage, lead and/or create a franchise business. Guest speakers and current franchise examples will be utilized. This course requires that participants be able to speak and write English fluently. Topics include: (1) franchise agreements, franchise suitability and growth potential, and international franchise growth and management (2) franchisee obligations such as participation in actual operations, use of approved products, non-competition and protection of trade marks (3) how to negotiate a franchise deal (4) how to convert an existing business into a franchise, and (5) the do’s and don’ts of franchising.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Define a franchise business and identify its pros and cons.
- Describe the fundamentals in operating a franchise.
- Assess a franchise agreement and evaluate franchisee and franchisor obligations, rights and responsibilities.
- Apply the basic principles to turning a non-franchise business into a franchise.
- Evaluate a franchise business systems and viability.
- Observe and recognise gaps in a franchise agreement.
- Gain confidence in operating a franchise business.
- Conceptualize a franchise plan.
