Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe atomic structure, main features of subatomic particles, and the importance of isotopes.
- Describe the general location of metals, metalloids, and nonmetals in the periodic table, and their main characteristics.
- Explain the difference between ionic bond and covalent bond.
- Identify ions, ionic compounds, molecular compounds, and correctly derive their names and formula.
- Calculate the number of moles of a compound from its mass.
- Derive molar ratios and use them to solve problems involving mass-volume or mass-mass relationships.
- Determine the limiting reactant and calculate actual and percent yield.
- Assign oxidation numbers to identify the oxidizing and reducing agent in a redox reaction.
- Calculate the cell potential under standard and non-standard conditions.
- Describe kinds of intermolecular forces and their influence on the solubility of compounds.
- Solve problems relating concentrations of solutions.
- Describe the characteristics of strong and weak acids and bases, and the role of buffer solutions.
- Calculate the pH and pOH of a solution.
- Solve problems involving acid-base titrations.
- Predict the formation of a precipitate.
- Carry on calculations to determine alkalinity and water hardness.
- Describe the chemical reactions involved in the precipitation of hardness ions, phosphate ions, and iron ions from water.
