Course Overview
In this course, students learn basic principles related to forest road location and design, harvest system selection, and harvest planning and operations. Students study a variety of harvesting scenarios to learn assess and site and match harvest method and equipment for the safe, economic, and environmentally responsible harvesting of forest stands. Engineering field survey and data collection methods are reviewed and applied to operational harvest planning tasks. Examples of how field survey data can be transferred to computer programs such as ArcGIS and the RoadEng Survey Map, Terrain, and Location modules to produce survey plots and site plan maps is also included.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe appropriate surveying techniques including preparation of complete and accurate field notes to current industry standards and practices.
- Integrate field data into computer applications relevant to forest engineering and operations.
- Recommend appropriate road construction equipment and techniques for given conditions.
- Discuss considerations for road location, design and construction that will minimize environmental impacts.
- Demonstrate current practices for managing surface water for the design and installation of minor drainage structures.
- Identify the types and characteristics of the different harvest methods employed in the forest industry. State the applications and limitation of different harvest methods, in terms of environment impacts, safety and economics.
- Describe raw forest product transportation systems, focusing on road transportation from landing to dump.
- Demonstrate safe field work practices related to forest harvesting and road operations.
- Identify harvesting opportunities and constraints by applying photo interpretation techniques and interpreting topographic and other resource maps.
- Describe current legislation and regulation related to forest operations.
- List the appropriate permits required for road construction and harvesting.
- Describe the major planning steps and data requirements for determining how much, where, and when to harvest timber in a given tenure.
- Prepare a simplified site plan related to forest harvesting.
