Course details
The forensic evaluation and documentation of injuries and trauma is a key component of the application of forensic health sciences for victims of non-intentional and intentional injuries, violence and crime. Although this expertise is commonly used in medicolegal death investigations the application can also be applied to the living patient “living forensics” a concept that is relatively new in Canada. This course is designed to provide the medical, scientific and forensic principles relevant to the investigation and forensic health care of both fatalities and the survivors or injuries and trauma. The course will focus on assessment, evaluation and documentation of blunt and sharp injuries, sustained in a variety of settings and the legal aspects of documentation of wounds and injuries. Students will engage in online discussions regarding the forensic evaluation of injuries, complete individual assignments, and analyze characteristics of injuries and their mechanisms, presenting their findings to their peers.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify blunt and sharp injuries including subcategories of each type.
- Compare and contrast the characteristics of blunt and sharp injuries.
- Assess the mechanism of injuries.
- Differentiate both patterns of injury and patterned injuries.
- Describe the application of forensic evaluation of injuries in fatalities and living patients.
- Critique the application of principles of forensic assessments.
- Demonstrate the forensic documentation of wounds and injuries.
- Explain the importance of medicolegal documentation related to injuries received in occupational incidents, violence and crime.
- Identify strategies for dealing with traumatic scenes .
- Formulate a process for evaluating a scene using the forensic evaluation of injuries.
