Course Overview
This final field survey course for the diploma program brings together all field survey components taught during two years of study. It focuses on the use of electronic total stations, data collectors, digital levels, and GNSS survey-grade equipment using onboard data collection. The course has a heavy emphasis on data-processing, data adjustment, and the presentation of geospatial information through dedicated survey and CAD software. Throughout the course, students work on both individual and group projects. In the second half of the course, students work in groups to pursue their chosen field capstone project. Projects will incorporate topographic measurements, control survey, highway design, subdivisions, and volumetric calculations employing the practical methods and procedures taught throughout the diploma. Emphasis will be placed on project planning and executing surveys using best practices and procedures applied in the geomatics industry.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Properly care for and maintain surveying equipment.
- Lay-out stations and offset lines, run levels and prepare cut sheets.
- Use various total stations to measure distance and angle data and to solve typical survey problems and tasks.
- Collect data using both onboard and handheld data-recording systems and apply necessary corrections.
- Research different methodologies to complete the final survey project to the required specifications.
- Determine the precision of geodetic survey instruments and their ancillary equipment using methods outlined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO.)
- Calculate and lay out horizontal positions of a spiral curve with corresponding vertical alignment.
- Determine astronomic azimuth using solar observation.
- Plan the field data collection to sufficiently cover the designated site to the required accuracy.
- Collect field data and apply any necessary corrections and adjustments.
- Integrate field and design data to depict the required results to industry standards.
- Summarize final results of the overall project, justify conclusions and make recommendations on the methods employed.
- Produce a professional report containing all of the survey data, computations, analysis and results.
Effective as of Fall 2024
