Course Overview
Enhance your career in natural resources with practical soil assessment skills. This field-based course introduces the Canadian System of Soil Classification (CSSC) and other key techniques used in forestry, arboriculture, natural areas management, ecological restoration, and more. Through hands-on experience at two field sites, you'll learn to dig soil pits, interpret soil horizons, perform hand texturing, differentiate humus forms, and analyze soil properties for resource management applications. This 12-hour course is designed for professionals and students in natural sciences, ecological restoration, forestry, resource management, arboriculture, planning, stewardship, outreach, and education. Students must provide their own transportation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Carry out field description of soils for various applications and in a variety of ecosystems using standard practices.
- Describe dominant factors and processes involved in soil formation and development of soil horizons.
- Describe soils using standard Canadian System of Soil Classification terminology
- Demonstrate soil sampling, handling methods and basic soil analyses, including hand texturing soil color assessment using Munsell Soil Color Charts.
- Identify soil humus forms in the field.
