Course Overview
The simulator activities associated with the course are a cloud solution that learners will access via a web browser. Upon completion of this course, learners will be equipped with the understanding and knowledge to perform their work with an essential level of proficiency regarding safe, efficient, and effective energy plant operation. The skills obtained will also help improve safety aspects of the energy industry and supports Canada's transition to a low carbon economy. Assessments will take place through individual simulation lab work, and learners must receive a passing mark to obtain the Microcredential.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Operate a simulated thermal power plant and complete basic plant operating sequences
- Demonstrate the process dynamics by exploring the available control strategies
- Test different start-up procedures, such as preparing the Small Clean-up Loop, preparing the Big Clean-up Loop, filling the boiler by gravity flow and forced flow, lighting-off all four burners by following the firing sequence on Plane D, etc.
- Identify malfunctions and abnormal process conditions
- Explain the available control and operating strategies
- Explain the function of all subsystems used in the Thermal Power Plant model
Effective as of Winter 2024
