Course Overview
This multidisciplinary course deals with leadership, project management and entrepreneurism. In this course, students learn how to assess opportunities, develop a business concept and create a plan to put their ideas into action. This course will increase the probability of success for students who are planning to start a business, students who are in the early stages of launching a business or students who are planning to work as managers for design companies. A series of lecturer and guest speakers will present the students with guidelines for setting up and maintaining a new media design business. Students will be assessed by in-class assignments, term project and final exam.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply life-career planning, research, and technology to identify trends and enhance employability and entrepreneurial competitiveness.
- Integrate ethical and effective business practices in dealings with prospect clients, colleagues and suppliers.
- Explain the forces that are driving the growth of enterprises in new media in BC and beyond.
- Use a SWOT analysis--strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats--for their own ventures.
- Explain the advantages and the disadvantages of the three major forms of ownership: the sole proprietorship, the partnership and the corporation.
- Describe the three types of franchising: trade name, product distribution, and pure.
- Explain how the negotiation process works and identify the factors that affect the negotiation process and utilize negotiation strategies for specific target markets.
- Prepare a marketing and financial business plan.
- Explain the differences among promotion, publicity, personal selling, service packing selling and advertising.
