Course details

This course introduces students to the structure, practice guidelines, and ethical codes of the engineering profession in Canada. It provides a comprehensive review of the roles and responsibilities of the professional engineer in society, especially the primary role of protection of the public and the public interest. Topics include ethical foundations, professional codes, sustainability and environmental responsibility, community and social engagement, as well as indigenous rights and reconciliation. Lectures and case studies specific to Canada will be used to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as an engineer. This course Is designed for internationally trained engineers who intend to apply for registration as a professional engineer. It is also suitable for those preparing to write the National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE). ​

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the key ethical principles governing engineering practice in Canada.
  • Familiarize themselves with the codes of ethics and professional conduct norms established by Canadian engineering associations.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the fundamental ethical theories and principles relevant to engineering ethics within the Canadian context.
  • Identify the key ethical considerations that engineers must address in their practice, including honesty, integrity, and fairness.
  • Recognize the importance of personal and professional accountability and the role of self-regulation in the engineering profession in Canada.
  • Analyze the social and environmental aspects of engineering activities.
  • Describe the interactions that engineering has with the economic, social, health, safety, legal, and cultural aspects of society.
  • Foster a commitment to lifelong ethical learning and self-reflection as an integral part of professional development.
  • Discuss the concepts of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
  • Apply professional ethics, accountability, and equity principles to engineering practice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify, assess, and develop solutions to ethical engineering issues.
  • Assess the environmental impact of engineering projects and propose ethical solutions for minimizing negative effects.
  • Analyze real-world engineering ethics cases specific to Canada and apply ethical theories to develop ethical solutions.
  • Engage in ethical debates and discussions to enhance critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills.
  • Discuss the ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies and innovations, such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and autonomous systems, within the Canadian engineering landscape​
