Course Overview
This elective course allows students to explore emergency nursing care for critically ill clients. Students will be exposed to six modules involving pediatric, adolescent and adult trauma clients. Pathophysiology, assessment, stabilization and transfer will be investigated for each case. Additionally, students will be given opportunities to critically examine concepts such as: child abuse and neglect; substance use; pain theory; homelessness; organ donation; and health of populations. This course may be taken on its own or as an elective.

Learning Outcomes
- Explore systematic assessment frameworks for use in resuscitation situations.
- Integrate knowledge of pathophysiology and data collection in order to plan nursing care for individuals during resuscitation.
- Critically analyze population health issues in relation to personal values and beliefs.
- Systematically inquire about complex health challenges specifically analyzing the impact of crisis on clients and families in relation to emergency nurses' role.
- Explore beyond the context of emergency settings, understanding the social and political context of global issues impacting client presentations.
- Examine prehospital and intrahospital decision making and the impact on emergency nursing and client outcomes.
